We pulled her into PUP and we were all in agreement, this was one
uncontrollable dog! Thinking back I can't help but laugh at her, the
fosters, and me. We were crazy to pull this dog in and we knew it
which made it even that much more fun and challenging to do so. She
was a hellion on wheels, this one. A real "wild child". We named her
Kiwi because we all thought her hair looked like kiwi skin.
After we had her vetted and spayed, a gentleman sent in an
application to become a foster. We checked out his references, I
talked with him on the phone and learned about
his
background working with dogs. It was
then that I realized we had the perfect little foster for him. I
knew that in time this man could turn this "wild child" of ours
around, or at least I hoped so.
Well, Dave and his wife Lynn did that and even more.
After a few months and many profile changes, we took Chewba on a
home visit and although they thought she was a beautiful dog, their
dog was not the friendliest toward her so I decided this wasn't
going to be a good match. I drove her back to Dave's. He didn't look
or sound disappointed at all that she had not found her "forever
home".
A couple of days later, I received a call from Dave telling me that
he and Lynn would like to adopt Kiwi, who they had renamed Chewba.
He went on to tell me he really thought she was going to be a great
little agility dog. I remember thinking, "if you can keep her off
the walls she'd be great".
I then realized I had just lost a great foster who could work with
our "problem kids", to a dog that reminded us all of a kiwi! Dave
reassured me that he and Lynn would continue to foster and work with
our dogs to turn them around so they could find their own home and
they have, ten-fold!
Well, Dave was right about this dog as I've learned he often is. He,
in such a very short time, has turned this dog around and she's now
running the agility course with him! In her second trial (after only
8 classes) Chewba had seven qualifying runs out of ten in the novice
class. She had 4 firsts and 3 seconds. There are some dogs that
train for months or years that don't do that well. This shows
you what a little patience, a lot of love, and some well spent time
and training will do for a dog.
It's up to you to help the dog(s) in your care become the best that
they can be, as Dave has done. Dave and
Chewba are quite the team and this is one amazing dog that has
a true "forever home"!
